SPOTS

March 22, 2024

MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO/SUPERINTENDENT, DR. ETHAN HILDRETH

Dear DAA Community,

May you have a spectacular spring break, and wishing you the very best during this time of rest, reflection, and fellowship. I hope you enjoy time with family and friends, with safe travels whether local or abroad. We will return for a brilliant finish to our 2023-24 school year during the final months! For our seniors, we wish them a splendid triumphal march during their final few school days and all events leading to a wonderful graduation.

Great thanks are due to our amazing DAAPA for the beautiful Iftar for the DAA community. The opportunity to break bread together was a gift during this special time. In addition, the many examples of charity and kindness among our students and our entire Leopard Pride have been uplifting during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

Our calendar for the upcoming school year has been completed, and I am happy to share the 2024-25 DAA Calendar in this edition of SPOTS. Among other benefits, this calendar provides a week-long break in October, giving a helpful pace of work and rest in the fall.

Families, during the weeks ahead please encourage one another to read great books together, whether sharing good discoveries with one another or enjoying a read-aloud regardless of age! Few things draw people together more than a fascinating story.

As we part for spring break, Ramadan Kareem!

ramadan care packages

This week we delivered our Ramadan Care Packages to the incredible support staff at DAA, as well as local schools in Dubai. This act of kindness and gratitude wouldn't have been possible without our entire community, Students, Parents, Staff, who generously donated items that will make a difference.

Thank you to our Student Councils in ES, MS, HS, Our Zayed Crew, ES Wellness Ambassadors and teachers who helped organize, pack and deliver over 300 care packages!

Ramadan performances and assemblies

Throughout the week, our students have been actively engaged in celebrating The Holy Month of Ramadan through a series of inspiring activities and events. From captivating performances to informative sessions, our students have passionately shared their knowledge and experiences with their peers to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of this sacred month, promoting unity and cultural awareness within our school community.

We are incredibly proud of our students!

DAA students take part in one of the region's largest MUN conferences!

Last week, students from Dubai American Academy had the opportunity to take part in one of the region’s largest Model United Nations conferences, GWAMUN 2024. Model United Nations (MUN) is a worldwide curriculum that encourages students to develop skills in public speaking, debate, and eloquence.

DAA’s students took on the roles of countries and had to advocate for their assigned country’s policy. These assignments require them to be referred to exclusively as “delegates.” Delegates learn to speak in third person, and put their own personal beliefs aside and challenge themselves to advocate in the best interests of their country.

This year’s GWAMUN conference challenged delegates to explore the theme of exploring technology in an advancing world. Topics ranged from the weaponization of AI to regulating biotechnology. Our delegates took home 6 awards! More than any other school – with 3 of our delegates selected for the showcase and our Secretary-General, Alexander Ghorayeb, winning the prestigious Ban-ki Moon Award for Best Overall Delegate.

Building upon this success, Dubai American Academy Model United Nations (DAAMUN) looks forward to venturing to New York City and taking part in Change the World MUN, which will allow delegates to go into the United Nations’ headquarters.

If your child is interested in joining DAAMUN, which has entered its 10th anniversary, please feel free to reach out to daamun@gemsdaa.net. DAAMUN engages delegates through hands-on learning with student-led presentations and workshops every Wednesday from 3:00 – 4:00 pm in T28.

Shoutout and thanks to Ms. Molly Gaudette, the Faculty Sponsor of DAAMUN, for her incredible support!

IB Visual arts

The showcase of artwork created by this year's Visual Art IB students opened this week!

Our opening event was a fantastic opportunity to engage with the artists, celebrate their hard work, and marvel at their creativity. Each piece showcased individual themes chosen by the students, resulting in a diverse and captivating exhibition.

Our students poured their hearts and souls into these artworks, and the support of our audience truly made the event special. We're immensely grateful for your presence and encouragement.

DAA Listens

At DAA we are committed to communicating effectively with our families. We believe that open communication between home and school is a vital component of our student’s success.

We are excited to continue our communication channel within our school community, DAA Listens. By scanning this QR code you will be able to share your compliments, comments or concerns directly with our Superintendent Dr Hildreth. There are 6 mailboxes located around the school, where students and parents can drop a postcard. Either method will ensure that Dr. Hildreth will receive the communication and that a member of staff will be back in touch with you quickly.

Your voice is highly valued and we look forward to listening to your feedback as we collectively seek to enhance every student’s experience at our school.
