Welcome from our sUPERINTENDENT, dR. ETHAN HILDRETH
Dear DAA Community,
Ramadan is regarded as the holiest month of the year for Muslims as it was the month in which the Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) on the night of Laylat Al Qadr, one of the last ten nights of Ramadan. The information included in this message is intended to help our school understand key aspects of Ramadan so that we can best respect the practices and traditions of our host country and Muslim culture.
Thank you families, students, and team members of DAA for the kindness and care you model every day, and particularly during such an important time. Your thoughtfulness helps make Dubai American Academy exceptional.
With kindest regards,
Dr. Ethan Hildreth
Important Information about The Holy Month of Ramadan
Ramadan is expected to fall on Thursday, March 23, though it will be confirmed closer to the time with an official moon sighting. School operating hours for students and staff are noted below:
Slices catering will be available during this time. More details will be shared separately by Divisions.
How long does Ramadan last?
Ramadan lasts for one complete moon cycle, which is usually 29 or 30 days. The moon sighting traditionally determines the duration.
Recommended tips and etiquette for Ramadan:
Dress Appropriately
Men and women should display a certain amount of modesty during the month of Ramadan. Be extra careful with the way in which you dress. Ensure that knees and shoulders are covered, be aware of necklines and wear loose fitting clothing during the month. Pashminas or wraps are great for covering up and extra confidence during Ramadan.
Exchange Ramadan Greetings
It is customary to use the greeting “Ramadan Kareem” when meeting Muslims, and at the end of Ramadan, for the three day Eid celebrations, “Eid Mubarak”. During the month of Ramadan the greetings are everywhere and using them is appreciated.
Be Charitable
An important element of Ramadan is to be generous to those less fortunate by donating food, clothes or money to individuals and charitable organizations. The spirit of giving is all around with many charities allowing everyone to get involved in some way.
Be Considerate
Fasting can play havoc with a person’s eating and sleeping habits, so be sympathetic to people around you. Remember that it is difficult to function on no food and water. Show respect for those who are fasting during the day by not eating and drinking in front of them.

World Poetry Day celebrates one of humanity’s most treasured forms of cultural and linguistic expression and identity. Practiced throughout history – in every culture and on every continent – poetry speaks to our common humanity and our shared values, transforming the simplest of poems into a powerful catalyst for dialogue and peace.
UNESCO first adopted 21 March as World Poetry Day during its 30th General Conference in Paris in 1999, with the aim of supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard. World Poetry Day is the occasion to honor poets, revive oral traditions of poetry recitals, promote the reading, writing and teaching of poetry, foster the convergence between poetry and other arts such as theatre, dance, music and painting, and raise the visibility of poetry in the media. As poetry continues to bring people together across continents, all are invited to join in.
DAA Listens
At DAA we are committed to communicating effectively with our families. We believe that open communication between home and school is a vital component of our student’s success.
We are excited to launch a new communication channel within our school community, called DAA Listens. By scanning this QR code you will be able to share your compliments, comments or concerns directly with our Superintendent Dr Hildreth. There are 6 mailboxes located around the school, where students and parents can drop a postcard.. Either method will ensure that Dr. Hildreth will receive the communication and that a member of staff will be back in touch with you quickly.
Your voice is highly valued and we look forward to listening to your feedback as we collectively seek to enhance every student’s experience at our school.
