Keeping yourself healthy and protected this winter

Eleven months into the pandemic and our community of students, staff and parents have done a remarkable job complying with the most important steps to protect ourselves and others from the dreaded Corona virus, steps that include practicing good hand hygiene, wearing masks, and social distancing. These are the same measures that can protect us from the seasonal flu as well.

Did you know that COVID-19 and the FLU are both caused by contagious respiratory viruses?

COVID-19 is caused by infection with a new coronavirus (called SARS-CoV-2) and flu is caused by infection with influenza viruses. Both viruses spread through the respiratory droplets when an infected person talks, coughs or sneezes, which may land directly onto another person or surfaces.

There is a similarity of symptoms of Covid-19 and the Flu…therefore testing is key!

Most common symptoms of covid-19 and the flu include, Fever or feeling feverish/chills, Cough, Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, Fatigue, Sore throat, Runny or stuffy nose, Muscle pain or body aches, Headache and Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults-CDC…it therefore becomes difficult to judge based on symptoms alone and testing is required.

Important differences…

A vaccine is available annually to protect against the most common influenza strains, whereas a vaccine for Covid-19 is still being tested, it is therefore advised that you get the flu shot at the earliest. Influenza antivirals drugs have been approved for the treatment of Influenza along with supportive medical management which is the only treatment modality available for COVID patients so far. The risk of complications for healthy children is higher for flu compared to COVID-19. However, infants and children with underlying medical conditions are at increased risk for both flu and COVID-19-CDC.

We thank our community for adhering to all health and safety measures and working with us in keeping our Schools safe.
