HIGH SCHOOL

October 7, 2021

Dear Parents,

We are excited to announce that on October 12th students from Grades 9 - 12 will begin their college journey through Arizona State University (ASU). GEMS Education and ASU have entered into a partnership to offer foundational college courses to GEMS students. Dubai American Academy (DAA) is privileged to host the pilot program, allowing our students to be the first in the GEMS Education Network to earn college credit through ASU.

The ASU Universal Learner Courses (ULCs) program offers over 25 college-level courses. Through successful completion of ULCs, students gain valuable experience, grow as learners, and leave the course better prepared for their post-secondary education. Courses completed with a “C” or above result in college credit, which is reflected on an ASU transcript. ASU credits are not only a valuable addition to future university applications, but are also highly transferable to other universities.

Of the 25 available ASU courses, four were selected for the pilot program. These include:

We are very proud of our pilot group of nearly 30 students and will ensure their success with both ASU and DAA support structures in place. For our Full IB students and those taking more than 2 AP subjects, we will revisit the possible enrollment of interested students after their external exams. These opportunities will continue to be available to those eligible across the year and we will keep our parent community informed as always.

Thank you for your continued support,

Tammy Jochinke

 High School Principal

MAP Testing

MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing will take place for students in Grade 9 and Grade 10 as well as those in Grade 11 and 12 English and AP classes. Testing in Reading, Language Usage, Science and Math will begin on October 10th. Students are encouraged to get a good night's sleep as well as a nutritious meal prior to writing. These tests help give us a picture of student progress and attainment over time at DAA. These test results may also help to determine eligibility into certain courses or programs.

Please assist in ensuring that your child’s computer is fully charged and that they also bring their charging cable.

Students have also been asked to ensure their computer settings are correct by following the following directions: Preparing for Fall 2021 MAP Testing

Student Photos

This week, we had the Stu Williams photographers in school to take student school photos. Make up photos took place on October 7th.

clubs fair

The annual Dubai American Academy clubs and activities fair took place on the morning of October 5th. This year’s fair boasted over 70 clubs and activities: everything from anime club to table tennis. The student club leaders set up informational tables and advertised their club to the student body. The fair had an electric energy fueled by both the club leaders’ and the attendees' enthusiasm. Club leaders sang karaoke, provided chocolate, and there was even a Pepper the robot sighting. The club and activities fair continues to be a great way for our students to get involved and to enrich their educational experience.
