Middle School News

Once again we would like to extend our appreciation for the families and children we have the honor to work with at DAA. We have had a great start to the 2018-19 school year and are happy to report that our students have been settling in well and smiles can be seen throughout the school day. The sixth graders have rapidly learned about the middle school and the seventh and eighth graders have been wonderful at welcoming them along with all of our new students!

We have introduced our students today to their Transformation and Discovery (T&D) groups. The T & D groups will meet every day except for Tuesday and this time will be dedicated to pastoral/advisory care, mindfulness and innovation projects.

After an orientation week full of introductions and the learning of routines, students will receive their schedules on Sunday. We are aware that some changes may need to be made to a few schedules. Our counselor, Ms. Mira, sent out an earlier email to this effect. The first priority, and the ones we will address first, are those for students missing a class in their schedule or those with duplicate classes. The second priority will be ensuring students are placed in the appropriate grouping for academic purposes (ELL, math (grade 8), Islamic, Arabic, SEND, French/Spanish). Please note that our student support team will be addressing tertiary issues such as elective choices beginning Monday using the schedule below.

MS Policies

With so many new families joining us in addition to our entire 6th grade being new to the Middle School, we would like to highlight some of the general expectations for our students. Please help support our policies from home in order to ensure that our students and staff can focus on the most important business at hand – teaching and learning.

We understand that traffic can cause difficulties in the morning but please try and have students at school by 7:25am at the latest so they have time to go to their locker and prepare for first period. Students are permitted to enter the Middle School learning Commons beginning at 7:15. Should students arrive to school any point past 7:40am, they are required to go directly to the Middle School office to sign in. If your child is going to be absent from school, please send an email to our attendance secretary, Ms. Souraya Itani at s.itani_daa@gemsedu.com who will record this information. As a reminder, Middle School students need to enter the school via the staircase near the field at the back of the school. The way to get to this staircase is via the hallway in- between the pool and the gym. In order to ensure the flow of students, Middle School students should not use the atrium.

We would also like to highlight a couple of key student expectations for the year. The strong majority of students have looked great coming in with the appropriate DAA skirt/pants, shirt and tie, and their black shoes with black laces. We ask assistance from our parents to take a second look at your child before they head off to school in the morning to ensure they are wearing the correct uniform. We also ask that you pay particular attention to the length of the skirts as many of our girls have grown over the summer and require longer skirts. Please also be advised that students are required to wear the DAA color house t-shirt on specified days throughout the year. Our first color house day will be Thursday, September 20th. This will be an MS Assembly Day where we will also share information about our Week Without Walls trips with students. Be sure to pick up your shirt from the Leopard’s Den before that time!

Please also be aware of our mobile phone usage policy. Students should not have their phones with them between the hours of 7:25a.m – 2:55 p.m. If any phone is seen or heard, it will be taken away from students to be retrieved at the end of the day from the main office. We greatly value your support as strive to ensure that the usage of phones does not distract from the learning process. If there is an emergency and a student needs to contact parents during the day, they are welcome to use our phone in the Middle School office. If a student is not feeling well, we ask that they see the school nurse who will call parents if necessary. Students are free to use their phones at the end of the school day.

Student Leadership Positions

There are currently openings for our aspiring leaders. The Student Council will be holding elections in the next couple of weeks. Information will be distributed to students regarding these elections.

Middle School Math Notes

Grade 6

We know that the transition to middle school is exciting and challenging at the same time. Math particularly can be a rigorous subject for many students. In order to help keep your students organized we think it would be helpful if next week they could bring a graph paper composition book or notebook. It can be about 100 pages, with a plastic or cardboard cover, and A4 size. Students will be using these for the entire year to create a Math Journal which will become a personalized resource. We look forward to sharing more about math class with families soon. Thank you for your support and help getting your child organized!

Grade 7

We are excited to start work in 7th grade math this year, again supporting our curriculum with the Eureka resources. It is helpful to know that students will not be receiving a textbook this year; instead, students will access resources online. In order to help keep your students organized, please make sure next week they bring a graph paper composition book or notebook and check Google Classroom daily as to not fall behind on homework. We look forward to sharing more information about grade 7 math soon. Thank you for your support and encouragement of our students!

Grade 8

This time in a student’s life can be very exciting and challenging. Adding to the excitement, 8th grade math will be using a new resource to support their learning, the Mathematics Vision Project, or MVP. Through this new curriculum, 8th graders will be engaged in inquiry-based learning opportunities that are intended to enable students to internalize math so that it can be used broadly throughout their lives. In order to help keep your students organized we think it would be helpful if next week they could bring a graph paper composition book or notebook. It can be about 100 pages, with a plastic or cardboard cover, and A4 size. Students will be using these for the entire year to create a Math Journal which will become a personalized resource. We are looking forward to a rewarding year with our 8th grade students and their families.
