HIGH SCHOOL highlights

November 1st, 2018

Dear HS Students and Parents,

Another very busy week at DAA. It was nice to finish the week with the raising of the UAE flag to commemorate UAE flag day and pay respect to our host nation that has provided such a wonderful setting for so many nationalities and cultures to come come together in our global village at DAA. We hope everyone can take a moment to reflect and be thankful for all the wonderful opportunities we have here and how lucky we are to call the UAE home.

We were also fortunate to bring the entire High School and Middle School all together for the first time to participate in Virgin Radio’s “20 schools in 20 Days with Kris Fade”. It was spectacular to see both sets of bleachers in the Gym full with our students. The showcase of talent from both teachers and students was impressive. The big question remains….where did Diego learn those dance moves…?

A few important events on the horizon.

November 7th Diwali

November 7th we will have an early dismissal at 12:00 noon in celebration of Diwali. Please ensure that you make appropriate arrangements for pick up if your child does not take the bus.

November 8th, 8:00 am - High School Coffee Morning MS/HS Cafeteria.

The High School Counselors will be on hand to discuss their role from social/emotional support to university applications, and to answer any questions parents may have about this process. We hope that many of you will be on hand to have a chat with our fantastic team of counselors.

November 14th & 15th - MS/HS Parent Teacher Conferences.

On the 14th and 15th of November will will have our first Parent teacher conferences for the year. One slight change for this year is that all Grade 12 IB Classes will still be in session. Non IB classes and grades 9-11 will not be in session.

As in previous years we are using a school booking website to allow parents to sign up for a 10 minute meeting with teachers. Please be punctual and arrive on time to your scheduled meeting as well as ensure that you wrap up discussions at the scheduled end time as other parents will be waiting. Should you require additional time to meet with a teacher, please contact that teacher directly. The link and booking code are below. Please be advised that the sign up will NOT go live UNTIL 12:00pm (noon), Thursday 8th of November. Assistant Principal, Tammy Jochinke will also be available for sign up on Wednesday 14th for any grade 9 or 10 parent that would like the opportunity to discuss MAP scores.

Thanksgiving - Monday 19th November.

High School Thanksgiving is back and we will be carving the turkey and having a Thanksgiving meal in honor of our support staff on Monday 19th. Our Thanksgiving meal is traditionally not on a Monday so please keep this in mind. Gobble Gobble…..

Have a restful weekend.

High School spanish

Last week, we had the chance to have Mr.Duff, who is a high school counselor, to come into our class and talk to us in Spanish about Argentina. This was special for us as we are normally studying a lot, and we were able to experience something different. However, this was also very important to our education because, in the new Spanish curriculum, we need to know how to understand different Spanish variations or accents which we will be assessed in the future. But hey, we were able to drink some nice traditional Argentinian drink called mate, which is similar to tea.

scrabble anyone?

This December 13-15th, DAA will be hosting the LARGEST youth scrabble tournament in the world and we are looking for middle and high school students to represent the Leopard community! We are looking for students who are willing to work hard to expand their minds and vocabularies - all while meeting new friends and having a lot of fun! Club meetings and practices will happen every Monday from 3-4pm in the high school.

If you think you have what it takes and would like to represent the Leopards in this December's WESPA Youth Scrabble Tournament, then please contact Mr. Eric Kinderman as soon as possible!
