Welcome back High School students and parents and a very big welcome to all the new members of our community!!

It was wonderful to see so many new students attend our orientation to high school today (August 30th). Students had the opportunity to learn about their schedules and meet with their counselors. Our student ambassadors also gave tours of the schools so that our new students could familiarize themselves with the building and see where their classes would be held. You could certainly feel the positive energy in the school!

Some important points to keep in mind:

We understand that traffic can cause difficulties in the morning but please try and have students at school by 7:25 am so they have time to go to their locker and prepare for first period. The first period begins at 7:40 am and all students are expected to be on time and prepared for their classes. If students arrive to school any point past 8:00 am, they are required to go directly to the High School office to sign in. Students should also follow instructions outlined in the communication from the school regarding drop off and pick up. We ask that all students are courteous and follow staff instructions when entering the campus. High School students should also keep in mind that the café in the main lobby area is off limits to students between the hours of 7:40 am – 2:55 pm. The main cafeteria on the first floor is available to students at both break and lunch times. Please refer to previous communication from Slices for more information. Please remember that students are not allowed to order food to be delivered to school.

Students are expected to arrive at school in the proper school uniform with the appropriate DAA skirt/pants and shirt and their all black shoes (including soles) with black laces. We ask assistance from our parents to take a second look at your child before they head off to school in the morning to ensure they are wearing the correct uniform. We also ask that you pay particular attention to the length of the skirts as many of our girls have grown over the summer and require longer skirts. Ties should also be worn from the start of school.

As in previous years, the seniors are excused from wearing ties but have been requested to have one in their locker or with their homeroom teacher for days when we have visitors on campus. Please also be aware of our mobile phone usage policy. Students should not have their phones on between the hours of 7:25 am – 2:55 pm. We greatly value your support as strive to ensure that the usage of phones does not distract from the learning process. If there is an emergency and a student needs to contact parents during the day, they are welcome to use our phone in the high school office. If a student is not feeling well, a teacher will give them permission to see the school nurse who will call parents if necessary. Students are free to use their phones at the end of the school day.

During the first 8 days of school, students have the opportunity to change, add/ or drop courses according to the schedule below. It is important to keep in mind that individual appointments may not be possible during the Add Drop time period.

  • New Students to DAA without a schedule
  • Seniors
  • Students with no schedule or missing classes

DAY 2: Monday, September 3rd

  • Grade 11 and Grade 12 changes

DAY 3: Tuesday, September 4th

  • Grade 11 and Grade 12 changes

DAY 4: Wednesday, September 5th

  • Grade 9 and Grade 10 changes

DAY 5: Thursday, September 6th

  • Grade 9 and Grade 10 changes

DAY 6: Sunday, September 9th

  • Final 3 days for changes -ALL students

DAY 7: Monday, September 10th

  • Final 2 days for changes -ALL students

DAY 8: Tuesday, September 11th (may change depending on when holiday is called)

  • Final day for changes -ALL students

Important Dates for September:

Welcome to the IB Night for Grade 11 students and parents will be on Monday, Sept. 17th in the auditorium. The evening will start at 6:00 pm and run until approximately 8:00 pm.

Senior College Night for grade 12 students and parents will take place on Tuesday, September 18th in the auditorium. The evening will start at 6:00 pm and run until approximately 8:00 pm. We are looking forward to a very exciting year in the high school.

Back to School Night for the high school is scheduled for Tuesday, the 25th of September (6:00 pm- 8:30 pm). This night is a great opportunity for our parents to get to know the school and their child’s teachers.

High School CAS

Welcome back to a new school year. My name is Tim Tschumperlin and I am the CAS Coordinator. If you are not familiar with CAS, it stands for Creativity Activity & Service. It is one of the core components of the IB Program. All High School students will be involved with at least one aspect of CAS during this school year. Below are the CAS requirements:

GRADES 9 & 10

Students will document hours in Managebac. I encourage students to keep track of what they are involved with since this will be an official record that you may use when seeking teacher recommendations and applying to universities in the future. Grade 9 students should record a minimum 5 hours in each category. Grade 10 students will document 10 hours minimum in each category. Students will be sent information on how to register their hours and how to use Managebac.

This year we will be connecting CAS with the UAE Moral Education program in which service & global awareness are key components. Students will be required to meet several standards which will be documented in Managebac. More information will shared with you once the program begins.

GRADES 11 & 12

Full IB students are required to complete the IB CAS requirement by April of their final year at school. Information regarding these requirements may be found on the CAS WEBSITE. Certificate or non-IB students must complete and document at least 25 hours of community service prior to April of their final year at DAA.

Dean of Students - High School

It gives me great pleasure to welcome both our new and returning students to the 2018-2019 school year! As the Dean of Students in the High School, I am here to support our students and ensure that they have the best possible experience here at Dubai American Academy.

I will be working closely with students and parents in order to maintain our high expectations for behavior, attendance, academic honesty and uniforms. I will also be here to work with students should they encounter an unexpected obstacle.

I look forward to assisting students as they reach their personal potential and pursue their educational dreams.

Welcome back to school from the High School Counseling Office!

We are excited to begin working with students on their high school schedules beginning on Sunday,

September 2 nd . All high school students have the first eight school days of the academic year to make

sure that the classes they have chosen are a good fit for them. The entire high school counseling team is

here to answer any questions student have or to help adjust schedules.

Please remember that we are not just here for scheduling. We are here for a wide variety of reasons –

from social and emotional issues to career and college readiness. For your convenience, here is a
